Afterschool Programs and Recreation

YOE After-School Programs are based in community centers and Detroit Public middle schools and serve youth ages 11-14 years old. After-school activities are facilitated in a meaningful context and support school day learning. Homework assistance and academic enrichment activities improve overall academic achievement and address individual needs and learning styles.

Other after-school activities include life skills sessions, substance abuse prevention workshops, conflict resolution and violence prevention activities, and recreational and creative arts clubs.

Saturday Arts Workshops

In collaboration with the College for Creative Studies (CCS), YOE offers year-round Saturday visual arts workshops for for youth 11-14 on Detroit's east side. Our goal is that youth who complete the program will be accepted into the high school of their choice as a first step on the path to personal, educational and career development.

Youth work with highly trained art instructors from CCS to explore visual art, design, and the many technical and professional careers in the field. Families are supported in making and keeping long-term commitments to the program.

Parent Involvement Initiative

The YOE Parent Involvement Initiative works to positively impact student achievement through building better relationships between parents, teachers and school administration at the schools where YOE operates its after-school programs. Our Site Coordinators help parents play a more active role in their child's school life by organizing leadership classes and parent planning groups, as well as connecting parents to local parenting and educational resources.
